Advice for Fluid Flying

Airport security continues to increase, imparting regulations on every aspect of a traveler’s luggage, clothing, and personal belongings. Some of the more recent regulations to be implemented are rules related to liquids being carried onto flights.

While dangerous liquids or those in unsafe containers have always been prohibited when flying, all airlines must now comply with federal regulations which apply to almost every type of fluid. These can include many things that travelers may forget to be conscious of, and can result in losing the item in question or long delays getting through security. The specific federal rules are updated and may change at any time, and many airlines impose additional restrictions.

The best advice for travelers is to contact each airline and request explicit information about their policies regarding liquids. Certain liquids which are mandatory for medical safety and child care are exempt, but even travelers carrying these items should be aware of regulations, and be prepared to declare the items and have them easily accessible for security personnel. They also must be sure to have the liquids in acceptable containers, and provide whatever documentation may be required.

Much of the stress that accompanies travel can be avoided with good preparation and up-to-date information.
